the picture to the right is a picture of the magic school bus! mrs. frizzel is going to help me investigate the u.n! uhh...what is the u.n? well...i know that it stands for united nations but that is about it. i guess we need to take a trip in the magic school bus! i will learn what the u.n. is, what the u.n. did, what the u.n. is doing, and what the u.n. will do! hit it, spike!
the picture to the right is the u.n's logo! so first things first, what is the u.n? the u.n.'s birth date is october 24, 1945, now on october 24 we celebrate their beginning! (well they have a day, we do not exactly *celebrate* it.) the u.n. was made to do exactly what the name suggests, unite the nations. in doing this their aim is to have the whole world working together in peace and harmony. sounds great, huh? they are basing their goal on *the principles of justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people.* the members recognize that the nations will have to balance out their independent needs and the needs of the nations as a whole. they also understand it will be difficult for each nation to set aside what they want in order for everyone else to have what they need. the united nation's headquarters is in new york city, though its land is international land. can you believe they even have their own postage stamps, post office, and has six official languages! there are 192 members of the u.n. that number also means that there are 192 countries in the u.n, one member from each country. the ambassador for the u.s. is susan e. rice! obama has this to say about rice, *susan has been a close and trusted advisor.* so she has got to be good. (:
the picture to the left is a women's rights movement poster thing. the u.n. was created after world war two and was set to fix international relations. the u.n. was kinda like the reborn phoenix. though we burned to ashes in world war two, we were born again to become one united world again through the u.n. the u.n. was set to establish and keep peace; however, throughout the years they have done sooo much more than that. *the united nations and its family of agencies are engaged in a vas array of work that touches every aspect of people's lives around the world.* here is a list of all the many tasks the u.n. has had a hand in: child survival and development, agricultural development, emergency and disaster reliefs, alleviation of poverty and economic development, environmental protection, and many other topics. so you can see the u.n. is very active and helpful to all communities.
this is a cute picture of the world melting! it looks like an ice cream cone! global warming is one of the top five issues the u.n. is currently dealing with...like it is really easy to see that the glaciers are melting and that it is super hot during the summer BUTTT we also must note the snow and stuff we got in alabama that usually does not happen. what i am saying is this issue is incredibly difficult. *at the heart of this debate is a momentous tussle between rich and poor countries over who steps up first and who pays most for changed energy menus*
this is a picture of a girl opening her hands to the future. what is the u.n. going to do in the future? well there are many critics of the u.n. today and one of them is joshua muravchik is one of those critics. he believes if the u.n. is going to succeed in the future they are going to have to make some serious changes. if these changes are not made then the u.n. will no longer be a useful organization. one of the issues with the u.n. is that the peace they want to keep is law enforced and peace should be something that we strive for because we want it. we should not be forced to keep peace...right? one thing muravchik says is, *if the world has been more peaceful since world war two it is due to the farsightedness international policies of the united states, not the peacekeeping of the u.n.* as you can see if the u.n. does not make some changes it will lose the support of many and thus making it a useless expense.
