Some negative effects of the New Imperialism, to me, are there was a ton of intolerance toward different races, the Brits sold beau coups of opium to China, and the awful treatment of the workers in the Congo. The first thing I mentioned was the intolerance toward other races, racism kinda got its start from the New Imperialism. Because the whites were the main people conquering land, they believed the others could not do so because of there ethnicity. They believed the other races were subordinate to the whites. Another thing was the opium wars. The British started selling opium to the Chinese because they had a surplus amount of opium and that is all they had that the Chinese wanted. The British made it illegal in their country but sold it to China. China thought this was unfair, I mean really, who wants their people to be druggies? No one. When they got mad at Britian, the Brits said it was their right to sell what they wanted becuase of free trade. So they fought over that...and SURPRISE, Britain won. That was not even the worst of the bad things that happened during the New Imperialism. One of the worst things that happened to during the New Imperialism, to me at least, was the exploitation of the workers in the Congo. The workers in the Congo worked long hours in very harsh conditions and they were beaten and such. ickkk. It was sooooo bad pretty much the whole world was against the way the workers were treated. The angry people caused Leopold to give up the Congo area, the conditions improved, but just barely...
